Liberated Games has been around since August 2004. Their mandate is to catalog all commercial games that have been released as freeware to the public.

Some great classics are in there, including:

• Wolfenstein 3D
• Doom/DoomII
• Quake I/II/III
• Descent I/II
• Hexen I/II
• Duke Nukem 3D
• Grand Theft Auto I/II

I love classic gaming!

Unfortunately most of them won’t run on my Mac, but that’s where the open source community comes in. Exult, for example, lets me play my old copy of Ultima 7 on pretty much any platform. Even the Zaurus Linux-based handheld! Descent II has also been ported to OSX. Hopefully some more of these classics will get re-worked in the future.

John Carmack, of id Software fame, is now blogging. He even put up an interesting posting on his experience and analysis of MIDP development.

BBC - Radio 4 - The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - The Adventure Game

Very cool.. a nice looking GUI front end to the classic Infocom game. Gotta love the BBC sometimes.

Rockstar Games has released their classic three games as free downloads! So anyone who hasn’t enjoyed the original Grand Theft Auto titles that rocked the video game world (and parents’ perceptions of them), go check them out!

Game Daily is a huge game site for all sorts of game information and demos. The best part is that you don’t have to log in and I consistently get >200KBps!

Bolo is a classic real-time strategy game being revived by the internet community. Historically, it was a Mac game, but WinBolo is a fantastic port of the game for Windows users.

LATZ.org carries all the classic Infocom games to I can enjoy them all over again. Particularly HHGTTG.. oh the memories!

The wonderful world of open source has created new and improved engines for arguably the best Ultima games ever made: IV and VII.

It supports better graphics and runs in Windows.
